Construction Underway at Bayhealth
In August 2008, Bayhealth began paving the way for its $130 million Phase II expansion at Kent General Hospital.
The 400,000 square foot expansion at Kent General will consist of a welcome center, an enlarged emergency department, an integrated cancer center, a new central utility building, and a 375-car parking garage with convenient access right into the hospital.
Construction has begun on the 375 car parking garage and should take one year. Construction on the new emergency department, cancer center, welcome center and central utility building also began in August and is expected to take three years to complete.
This expansion is Phase 2 of Bayhealth’s 10-year strategic plan designed to address present and future healthcare needs. Phase 1 construction was completed in 2006 and consisted of three new floors with all private rooms. This included the two-story Center for Women and Infants now located on floors 5 and 6, and a one-story medical-surgical unit on the 4th floor.
Construction Facts
- Welcome Center – 15,000 sq. ft. and will include a retail center. Construction began in August 2008 and is expected to be completed in January 2011.
- Central Services Building – 30,000 sq. ft. Construction will begin in May 2009 and is expected to be completed in April 2010.
- Emergency Department – 35,000 sq. ft. and will provide us with the space to expand to up to 56 treatment bays. It will include a heliport on the roof of the Trauma Center. The expansion includes shell space for future needs. Construction began in August 2008 and is expected to be completed in January 2011.
- Integrated Cancer Center – 35,000 sq. ft. center that will house both radiation on the first floor and medical oncology services on the second floor. Currently our medical oncology department is located inside the hospital, while our radiation department is located in a separate building down the street on Governors Avenue. Construction began in August 2008 and is expected to be completed in January 2011.
- Parking garage – 135,000 sq. ft. with 375 spaces. Construction began in July 2008 and is expected to be completed in June 2009.
- Total square footage (not including parking garage) = 280,000 sq. ft.
- Total square footage (including parking garage) = 415,000 sq. ft.
- Completion of the entire expansion is anticipated to be January 2011.
