When should I go to the emergency department?

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department if you are experiencing any of these symptoms associated with the following complaints:

Chest Pain

  • Pressure, tightness, pain, or a squeezing or aching sensation in your chest or arms; may spread to your neck, jaw or back
  • A feeling of fullness, nausea, indigestion, heartburn or abdominal pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness

Signs of Stroke

  • Numbness or weakness in the face, arms, or legs, often on 1 side of the body
  • Episodes of dizziness
  • Any changes in normal vision, the loss of vision in 1 eye or double vision
  • Difficulty speaking or understanding speech
  • Severe, sudden headache

Other reasons to seek emergency care are:

  • Major burns
  • Broken bones
  • Injury to the head or neck
  • Abdominal pain
  • Loss of consciousness or fainting
