Stroke Care

A stroke, sometimes called a brain attack, happens when blood flow to the brain is reduced or cut off. Brain cells can start to die without the oxygen and nutrients they need. If you or your loved one is suffering a stroke, every second counts. It’s important to know the warning signs and be treated quickly by a knowledgeable and responsive care team.

At Bayhealth we’re raising the bar when it comes to treating stroke. Our certified Primary Stroke Centers at both Kent and Sussex Campuses exceed national standards in providing timely and attentive care. Our award-winning team is ready 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assess and accurately diagnose patients with signs of stroke. By determining the type of stroke and the parts of the brain being affected, we can provide the treatment that’s right for you. So you can feel good knowing Bayhealth excels in providing the care you need when you need it most.

Some of the factors that put people at risk of stroke are:

  • High blood pressure
  • Irregular heartbeat (known as atrial fibrillation)
  • High cholesterol
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Heavy alcohol use
  • Physical inactivity and obesity
  • Family history of stroke

Recurrent strokes make up a quarter of the nearly 800,000 strokes that occur in the United States each year. This is why we work so hard at not only treating stroke, but educating patients and helping them reduce their chance of having another stroke. We’re there for you throughout your recovery journey with resources such as inpatient rehabilitation; physical, occupational and speech therapies; and stroke support groups. Read our Stroke Program Handbook (English | Spanish) to learn more.
