Surgical procedures

Breast

Lumpectomy
During this procedure, which typically takes between 15 and 40 minutes, the breast tumor or “lump” is removed along with some of the normal tissue that surrounds it. The amount of the breast that is excised depends on the size of the tumor itself.

Total mastectomy
The breast tissue and the nipple are removed.

Modified radical mastectomy
The breast, most of the lymph nodes under the arm and often the lining over the chest muscles are removed.

Radical mastectomy
The breast, lymph nodes and chest muscles are removed. This is not a commonly performed procedure.

Breast reconstruction
Working with a plastic surgeon, the breast surgeon rebuilds the breast to restore its appearance, to give it the most natural look possible. Great strides have been made in reconstructive surgery so that today women have new and better choices.

Lung

Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS)
In this minimally invasive procedure, surgeons use specially designed instruments through small openings to remove the lung tumor.

Tumor resection
In this “open” or traditional surgery, a surgeon removes the tumor along with a section of the lung that contains the tumor.

Lobectomy
Surgeons remove the entire lobe of one lung.

Pneumonectomy
Surgeons remove an entire lung.

Prostate

Robotic prostatectomy
Surgeons use the most advanced technology to remove the prostate tumor with high-precision instruments, sparing nerves and improving outcomes.

Prostatectomy
A traditional surgical approach to removal of a prostate tumor, including nerve sparing.

Colorectal

Resection
Surgeons remove part of the colon that is affected by cancer.

Brain

Skull-based tumor surgery
Surgeons use minimally invasive approaches to remove tumors such as meningiomas, chordomas, gliomas and others.

Craniotomy
Using image guidance, surgeons remove part of the bone from the skull to expose the brain to remove cancerous tissue.

Endonasal endoscopic surgery
With a minimally invasive approach, surgeons remove tumors and lesions directly through the nose and sinuses.

Radiation treatments

Breast

Image-guided radiation therapy
Using specially designed computer software and 3-D images, highly targeted radiation beams create a treatment pattern to treat breast tumors without harming surrounding healthy tissue.

Partial breast radiation (HDR)
A specialized radiation therapy technique that aims to treat breast cancer in a shorter time frame than standard external beam radiation—10 treatments (“fractions”) delivered twice a day for 5-7 days. Standard external beam radiation typically requires 30-35 daily treatments.  A device (such as SAVI,TM Contura,TM or MammositeTM catheter) is placed inside the tumor cavity. A High Dose Rate (HDR) radiation source is placed into channels of the catheter to deliver radiation doses to the tumor cavity.

Lung

External beam radiation
Physicians use high-powered radiation to target the area where the tumor resides. Treatments occur over a period of time and at intervals that are right for the cancer type and stage.

Stereotactic radiosurgery
Precisely targeted radiation therapy delivered in high doses, performed in just one or a limited number of treatments.

Brachytherapy
Physicians place seeds that contain radiation energy into the cancer tumor so that they can work continuously to destroy the cancer cells.

Prostate

External beam radiation
High-powered radiation targets the area where the tumor resides. Treatments occur over a period of time and at intervals that are right for the cancer type and stage.

Prostate Brachytherapy
Surgeons place seeds that contain radiation energy near the tumor. The seeds work continuously to destroy the cancer cells.

Colorectal

External beam radiation
High-powered radiation targets the area where the tumor resides. Treatments occur over a period of time and at intervals that are right for the cancer type and stage.

Brain

External beam radiation
High-powered radiation targets the area where the tumor resides. Treatments occur over a period of time and at intervals that are right for the cancer type and stage.

Stereotactic radiosurgery
A team of radiation oncologists, medical physicists and radiation therapists deliver precisely targeted radiation therapy in high doses, in just one or a limited number of treatments.

Medical Therapies

Chemoembolization
Specialists deliver chemotherapy drugs directly to a tumor through a narrow tube (catheter).

Chemotherapy
Specially trained nurses (RNs) deliver intravenous drug therapy through infusion in a series of treatments.

Targeted therapy
This special kind of drug therapy uses a combination of substances to target a specific cancer. These types of therapies can contain antibodies and growth inhibitors.
