Volunteer Opportunities

Catheterization Lab holding area volunteers provide support services to the staff in the lab by assisting with organizing supplies, picking up clean linens and clerical duties.

Central Supply assistant volunteers provide support to the Central Supply staff by answering doorbells, stocking supply shelves and other duties.

Chaplaincy volunteers offer assistance to the chaplain by visiting patients and responding to pastoral requests made by families and staff. There are two types of chaplaincy volunteers – on-site and on-call.

Volunteers should be a deacon or a licensed or ordained clergy recognized by a religious body.

The role of the volunteer clergy is to provide timely and compassionate spiritual care to patients, their families and staff in accordance with Bayhealth policies and our Planetree model of person-centered care.

Volunteer on-call clergy are asked to serve 3 to 4 times a month during designated periods. Volunteers can’t live more than 45 minutes from the hospital where they’ll be volunteering.

Clerical Services volunteers provide clerical support services by organizing files, assembling packets, answering phone calls, and other tasks to a wide variety of departments throughout the Bayhealth.

Provide relaxation as a compassionate touch volunteer. These volunteers reduce stress for patients to enable them to relax, and to make the patient’s stay more pleasant by providing compassionate touch hand rubs.

Department support volunteers provide clerical and other support services, such as events or one-time duties, to various departments as assigned.

Dialysis volunteers assist staff in the transportation of patients, perform clerical duties, and assist staff in other various other ways as needed.

Emergency Department treatment area volunteers provide support services to the patients, family members, and staff in the treatment area of the Emergency Room such as transportation, errands, restocking, and beds.

Endoscopy volunteers provide non-clinical support such as completing linen orders, obtaining mail from the mail room, answering calls, and providing clerical support.

Food Service assistant volunteers perform a variety of support services to assist Food Services including putting away supplies, breaking down boxes, stocking items, and assisting in other areas as needed.

Information Desk greeter volunteers welcome and provide hospitality to all visitors of Bayhealth. The greeter assists Patient Advocacy staff with greeting patients and visitors, and providing them with information and assistance.

Library assistants help the librarian answer phones, catalog new books, help maintain the card catalog, and input information into the computer.

Mail Room volunteers assist with processing mail, affixing postage, delivering mail, distributing flyers, and processing of large mailings.

Meal Mates volunteers provide non-medical support to nursing units by assisting patients in preparation for, and assistance with, meal time. This includes distributing warm washcloths before meals, preparing the area, positioning the tray comfortably, visiting, and cutting food, if needed.

Music volunteers reduce stress for patients, enable them to relax, and make everyone’s day brighter and happier through music–vocal or instrumental.

Oncology/Infusion greeter volunteers provide non-clinical support services to the Medical Oncology/Infusion staff and patients by giving new patients a tour of the facility, greeting, serving refreshments to patients, and assisting in other ways.

Oncology/Infusion volunteers provide non-clinical support services to staff such as picking up pharmacy orders, taking specimens to the lab, offering refreshments to patients, and assisting in other ways.

Outpatient waiting room volunteers greet, direct visitors when needed, and provide support services to the patients and family members upon arrival at the Outpatient Services waiting room. They also assist by restocking supplies, transporting labs and paperwork, and working with staff.

These volunteers visit patients to see how their stay in the hospital is and report any needs to staff.

Pet-Assisted visitation (PAV) handler volunteers provide a certified pet and accompany that pet to visit patients in nursing units to brighten the day of patients and staff.

The PAV handler volunteers, or Pet Therapy Teams, are all certified through the National Capital Therapy Dog Program. If you have not already been through this training, please contact Beth Peterson at DelmarvaRegionNCTD@gmail.com before completing the application.

Pharmacy support volunteers assist staff by delivering medications to nursing stations, picking up orders from stations, assisting with pre-packaged medications, and transporting carts to Central Supply.

Plant Operations (Plant Ops) assistant volunteers help by performing minor mechanical and preventative maintenance throughout the hospital.

Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) volunteers assist PACU staff with providing clinical services through activities such as transporting patients, preparing bed areas, obtaining items needed for staff, and providing ice chips.

Emergency Department treatment area volunteers provide support services to the patients, family members, and staff in the treatment area of the Emergency Room such as transportation, errands, restocking, and beds.

Surgical waiting room receptionists serve as liaisons between the Operating Room (OR), Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Day Surgery, and surgical patients, family and friends. The receptionist offers support to those waiting for loved ones that are having procedures performed by one of the above-mentioned departments.

Wayfinder volunteers welcome and provide hospitality services to patients and visitors entering and leaving the entrances of Bayhealth. These volunteers play a key role in both the patient and visitor experience at the hospital.
