Stay Active this Winter by Visiting DE State Parks
Some of us may feel the urge to stay inside when the weather starts getting cold, but it is actually a great time to get out and enjoy one of Delaware’s 17 beautiful state parks. Take it from avid runner and Bayhealth Cardiologist Roberto Scaffidi, MD, “It is so important for us to continue our healthy habits into the winter months.”
“Walking or running outside is great for both our heart and mental health,” says Dr. Scaffidi. “The trails at our state parks are perfect for this.” Here are just a few reasons why you should give it a try:
● The parks have a completely different atmosphere in the winter and the views are beautiful in their own way.
●There are no bugs and fewer people.
● The skies are clear and crisp. Sunrises and sunsets can actually be much more spectacular in the winter than they are in the summer.
● Speaking of clear skies, if you time your hike right you can attend one of the educational stargazing programs that some of the parks offer afterward. You don’t even have to stay up late since sunset is earlier.
● Park entry is free from December 1 to February 28.
Dr. Scaffidi says to make sure you are dressed properly. “It is important to stay warm but also dry when exercising in the cold. Wear layers and put them on and off to avoid sweating as much as possible,” he says. Be sure to wear a hat and gloves and don’t forget the sunglasses and sunscreen.
