Dean E. Johnson, MD

Dean Johnson, MD, is a board-certified emergency medicine physician.

Dr. Johnson went to college to pursue nuclear technology, but his participation in the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad as an extracurricular activity gave him a taste of prehospital emergency care—and he was hooked.  

After entering medical school, Dr. Johnson had no doubts he would specialize in the field of emergency medicine. The opportunities to interact with and learn from many different kinds of patients and the challenges that come with making a diagnosis on the fly have continued to drive him in his career as an emergency physician.

Living out the true meaning of “doctor” which comes from the Latin root word “docere”– to teach, Dr. Johnson is passionate about teaching and continues learning about disease processes in his daily work. He values the human connection he has with each patient who visits the emergency department in a time of need. He strives to provide comfort, and to listen and understand each patient’s story so they feel heard and respected in addition to having a plan to get better. Dr. Johnson also takes great pride in sharing his knowledge with medical students and residents so that they will then use their understanding and skills to benefit future patients.

In his spare time, Dr. Johnson enjoys taking walks with his wife of 30+ years, being outside, and repairing things that are broken. He also likes to go kayaking on Delaware’s waterways.
