Bayhealth Celebrates Match Day

Bayhealth celebrated Match Day on March 21, welcoming a new class of physicians to join its Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs. This annual event marks the beginning of careers for resident physicians and reinforces Bayhealth’s commitment to growing access to health care and medical education in central and southern Delaware.

This year, Bayhealth matched with 33 new physicians to join its four programs-- emergency medicine, internal medicine, family medicine and general surgery. These talented individuals will contribute to the ongoing success of Bayhealth's residency programs, which have provided care for more than 92,000 patients over the past four years.

Now in their fifth year, the Family Medicine Residency Program matched with eight residents and the Internal Medicine Residency Program matched with 16 residents. The Emergency Medicine Residency Program, now in its third year, matched with six residents. The General Surgery Residency Program, now in its fourth year, matched with three residents.

The programs allow new medical doctors to gain more experience over the next three to five years working in a hospital setting and community-based practices. Residents will also have access to innovative training opportunities at the state-of-the-art Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine Simulation Center.

In addition to welcoming new resident clinicians on July 1, Bayhealth will also welcome its first two participants of the new Gastroenterology Fellowship program.

The Gastroenterology Fellowship Program was accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in July 2024, providing physicians who have finished residency the opportunity to gain advanced training under experts in the specific specialty of gastroenterology.

“Bayhealth was very pleased to celebrate our fifth annual Match Day. Thirty-three talented and excited new residents were selected in the match, from across the country and globe,” said Bayhealth Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Gary Siegelman, MD, MSc. “With close to 100 residents and fellows currently in our programs, Bayhealth is working to train and retain more physicians that establish their practice in Delaware with the long-term goal that this will provide more skilled medical clinicians for our communities.”
