Ultrasound

An ultrasound is a diagnostic procedure that uses sound waves instead of radiation to produce images of soft tissue and structures within the body. Ultrasounds are used to view internal organs in real time as they function and assess blood flow. The technologist uses a hand held instrument called a transducer which produces sound waves as it glides over your skin. Sound waves bounce off the organs like an echo and return to the transducer to provide digital pictures.

Many ultrasound exams require prior preparation that may include fasting or filling your bladder. Please check with your physician for specific directions prior to your procedure.

Although the gel we apply to your skin during the procedure won’t stain clothing, you may want to wear washable clothing.

We may perform an ultrasound on an outpatient basis or as part of your stay in a hospital. Generally, an ultrasound follows this process.

1. You may be asked to remove clothing, jewelry, or other objects that could interfere with your ultrasound. If necessary, we may ask you to wear a gown.
2. During your procedure, you’ll be lying on your back or side. Your cooperation matters – it helps us get the images your physician needs.
3. We’ll use a warm, clear gel on your skin over the area we need to examine.
4. We will press the transducer against your skin and move it around over the area being studied. At times, we’ll apply more pressure to get a better image.
5. If we are assessing blood flow, you may hear a pulsing sound.
6. Once your procedure is completed, we’ll wipe off the gel.

The ultrasound procedure isn’t painful, but sometimes you may experience discomfort. This is especially true if you’ve had a recent injury or surgery. We’ll do our best to make you comfortable and complete the procedure quickly.

There is no special care required after an ultrasound procedure. You may resume your usual diet and activities unless your physician advises you differently.
