X-Ray

There are many different types of x-rays. Your experience will be unique depending on various factors, such as your age, gender, and the reason your doctor referred you. Our x-ray technologists will guide you through the procedure based on your particular needs.

X-ray uses low doses of radiation that pass through your body to create detailed images of your anatomy. Our fellowship-trained radiologists are also physicians, and they interpret your images with an expertise that allows your doctor better understand your illness or injury.

You won’t be required to prepare for most x-ray studies, but there are some exceptions. For x-rays that require oral contrast, your doctor or Bayhealth’s scheduling department will give you specific instructions prior to your appointment.

Although we use very low doses of radiation, we still need to know if you are pregnant or suspect you might be. Please inform both your doctor and the technologist who is conducting your x-ray if you are pregnant or suspect you might be.

Because each patient is different, each x-ray procedure is different. Whether you’re staying with us on an inpatient basis, visiting one of our ambulatory (outpatient) locations, or being seen in the emergency department, there are some aspects of an x-ray that will be the same.

1. You may be asked to remove clothing, jewelry, or other objects that could interfere with your x-ray. If necessary, we may ask you to wear a gown.
2. Your doctor’s orders will help our technologists determine how you should be positioned for your x-ray – whether you’re lying, sitting, or standing. Your position matters – it helps us get the images your doctor needs.
3. The x-ray procedure isn’t painful, but sometimes the manipulation of a body part being examined may cause discomfort. This is especially true if you have had a recent injury or surgery. We’ll do our best to make you comfortable and complete the procedure quickly to minimize any discomfort.
4. Try not to move while images are being taken, because movement can blur your images.

Most x-rays don’t require any special type of care afterward, but your doctor may give you specific instructions depending on your particular health history.
