About
Growing up with two parents who worked in healthcare provided early inspiration for Dr. Mahendraraj to consider a similar path. He saw how dedicated his mother and father were to caring for others and how rewarding it was to make a difference in someone’s health.
During medical school, he was immediately attracted to the surgical field. He liked working with his hands and being able to fix a medical issue that could change the course of a patient’s life.
Dr. Mahendraraj is fellowship-trained in hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery—a subspecialty focused on liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile duct treatments—as well as kidney and abdominal surgery and abdominal transplant surgery. He uses cutting-edge surgical modalities, including the da Vinci robotic surgical system, to treat disease in difficult locations of the body. This includes liver tumors, pancreatic cancer, and other disorders affecting these organs. He also performs reconstructive surgeries of the bile ducts and gastrointestinal tract as well as vascular access surgery for hemodialysis.
By showing deep respect and empathy, Dr. Mahendraraj strives to build a strong patient-doctor relationship with each person who comes to him for care. He considers it an honor to earn a patient’s trust and provide treatment that alleviates their suffering and enables them to get back to enjoying life.
Dr. Mahendraraj also serves as associate program director for Bayhealth’s General Surgery Residency program. He is passionate about clinical research, teaching new physicians, and integrating population-based research to benefit community health. In his spare time, he and his wife like to go on hikes, visit the beaches, and have picnics.
